Why
Dana Biosphere Reserve may sound like an experiment gone wrong, yet the setting for this intimate, earthy eco-lodge is ruggedly beautiful – especially when illuminated by candlelight after dark. The building is constructed in mud to an eco-friendly design and inspired by local architecture. There are 26 rustic-chic rooms, some with balconies, along with light-filled common areas. A stay provides a great opportunity to engage with local Bedouin. They staff the lodge and serve as guides, so you can explore safe in the knowledge your stay is socially and environmentally responsible.
Pros & cons
Tranquil setting in a dramatic, rugged desert
Cuisine is fresh, tasty and organic
Chance to explore Bedouin culture and the unique biosphere
Navigating by candlelight may be a bit too basic for some
It’s a trek from Amman, but well worth it
Where
This remote lodge has a brilliant setting in the craggy wilderness of Jordan’s desert country. Small, welcoming Bedouin villages, local fauna and flora, and amazing geology and history are right at your fingertips. Hiking, canyoning and biking are popular activities here, and the serene setting as the sun goes down is simply a magical experience.
Tips
Meet the locals
Local Bedouin live in goat-hair tents around the property – some staff the lodge or work as guides, others provide transport and herd goats. Expect lots of invitations to tea.
Take a hike
The 14km Wadi Dana full-day hike (guided or self-guided) through Dana Biosphere Reserve is fantastic. Our advice: get a transfer to Dana Guesthouse (1,200m) and hike down to Feynan (325m).
Local handicrafts
The on-site community project employs local artisans to produce decorations and candles. You can watch them do it, and buy their wares in the small gift shop.
Sleeping out
There's no air conditioning, and in the summer months when the temperatures are sweltering, you can sleep out on the panoramic roof terrace under billion stars.
